Smoky’s story and facts about trees

One day In May, in Lincoln national forest, New Mexico. It was especially hot, which meant that the forest had become very dry. No one knows for certain how the fire started. Maybe someone, dropped a lighted match, or left their campfire burning. But soon those little flames caught fire to the dry shrubbery. And the fire was soon engulfed in flames. One man called the ranger station after he figured out where the fire was. And firefighters soon rushed to the scene. But before they could put out the fire, they had to get to it. Cutting through the woods, they eventually got to the fire, using they’re bulldozers to dig firelines. But the fire soon overtook the lines and spread to the other side of the forest. The animals ran from the fire, but in the confusion, many ran right into it. Animals who hid were soon engulfed and even those who ran didn’t all make it out. Soldiers from Fort Bliss, Texas were even dropped off to stop the fire. In one section of the fire, twenty-four firefighters were trapped by the flames. As the wind increased those firefighters were forced to lay on a rockslide face down with wet handkerchiefs on their face. The firefighters all survived the ordeal. And found one lone bear cub who had been burned. They took care of him and nursed him back to health. He was then named Smokey and made the icon of preventing forest fires.

A poster I made to raise awareness about protecting trees.

It is important to learn about trees because we benefit off them so much, and our lives depend on them. So if we keep destroying them, it will not be good for us. We all are responsible for keeping trees safe, because they help all of us, and that means we should help them too. I am going to help by asking to take trees from a spot that is going to be destroyed soon and replanting them near me. You can encourage others to keep trees safe by talking about trees to them and creating posters to raise awareness.

Trees in Literature

In class we all read different tree stories and answered questions about how trees played roles in the story and what we should learn from them. The title of the book I read is Why There is No Arguing in Heaven and is written by Deborah Lattimore. the characters are Hunab Ku, Sun God, Maize God, Lizard House, and Moon Goddess. the plot is thatb Hunab KU challenges the other gods to create a being to worship them. The role trees play in the story is that the Moon Goddess creates tree humans with a Catzim tree. The main conflict is the gods competing against each other to sit by Hunab ku’s side. The Maize God solves the conflict by creating humans.Trees are used to be twisted into humans but are soon washed away by water. The message is how humans were created.

Tree update

A while ago I wrote a poem about a tree I adopted. He is still there, and not much has changed, he still has a vine around him. And is still barely standing. I got my name because my dad’s middle name is Ian, and my parents liked how it sounded a lot. In the Bible my name means gift from God. And it is also the Scottish version of John and means God is Gracious. My tree’s name is Vinny-vine because he has lots of vines around it and the name Vinny goes well with vine. And my critters name is Nutella-mortuus est-jaune-黒-отверстие-Pinto-Ruhe in Frieden-5/24/21 because I wanted a stupid long name for him like celebritys children. His name is Nuttie for short. Here is what the name means. Nutella, because I found him near a bunch of chewed up Nutella cartons. Mortuus est, because that means dead in Latin, and he’s dead. Jaune is French for yellow, because of his yellow stripes. The symbol is Japanese for black, because he also has black stripes. The Russian letters mean hope, because he has a hole in his back. Pinto is an inside joke with my brother. Ruhe in frieden is German for rest in peace, because, you know. And the letters are the date that I found him.

My tree

Here is a dialogue between my two characters.

Nuttie: Hey Vinny!

Vinny: Nuttie! I thought you were dead!?

Nuttie: I am. I’m a ghost now

Vinny: Oh.

Nuttie: Seen anything cool lately?

Vinny: I haven’t seen anything, but I did like listening to the LA class nextdoor read a book called the Westing Game.

Nuttie: I should read it!

Vinny: You should! But it’s too bad I won’t get to listen to any stories for a while.

Nuttie: Why’s that?

Vinny: Because summer is approaching, and all the kids will leave.

Nuttie: That’s ok, I’ll keep you company!

Vinny: Thanks buddy!

Tree Book project

How we made the book: First my class wrote poems about trees we found around the campus. We described what they looked like and why we chose them. Then we used cutouts of words with screens on them that lots of us used in our poems. Then we put a dab of paint on the screen and spread it around with a squeegee that printed the words onto a piece of Matt board that was meant to look like a tree. After that we used gelli pads and spread akua ink on them. We then put leaves and small flowers on the pad and then put dictionary paper over it. Then we used a brayer to flatten the leaves under the paper. That created a silhouette of the leave called a ghost print. But, there is another kind of print that is more detailed that happens when you remove the leaf and use the brayer on another sheet of dictionary paper against the already used pad. These prints show more of the small details in the objects.

The next step is to cut the mat boards to look like trees. After that we folded a piece of paper to make the foundation of our books. The step after that is collaging. Which we did by cutting out our akua ink prints and using small photos in a picture dictionary to create scenes in the foundation of our book. This part was totally left up to us, and we had a lot of freedom creating them.

We then added envelopes to the books and collaged on them to make them blend in. In the envelopes we put in poems that we made called branches and salute to my roots.

This project was all made possible by Ms. Gignoux who is the artist that taught us how to make these books. Here is her website, so you can learn about her work and her artistic mission.https://gignouxart.com/. This book was very fun to make. And I loved how much creativity and independence we could use while making it. It was very satisfying when it was finished. And I hope to make more projects like it in the future

Stock Market Game

In my class we are playing a stock market game. We are given 20,000 fake dollars and told to fake invest in six company’s. The goal is to make the most money in three months. We also made stock company’s and names for them.

We are doing this because a character in the book we are reading, who’s name is Turtle, is big into the stock market and checks stocks all the time.

Here are all the stocks I invested in.

I invested in Tesla because I heard the company was on the rise. I invested in State Farm because its a big company that’s stocks were going up. I invested in the others because they were companies that I had heard of and that I believed would be on the rise.

Lady or the Tiger

We read the a story named Lady or the Tiger by Frank Stockton in class. Here is the story so you can read it too!
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjc-umkoKvuAhVnMlkFHc0oAr8QFjABegQIAhAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fpinkmonkey.com%2Fdl%2Flibrary1%2Fdigi506.pdf&usg=AOvVaw0nRAvx_s2CJpJ0Rh280Kzb

We then wrote endings to the story since Frank Stockton didn’t. Here is mine to read and some pictures of the scene!

Fine, fine I’ll tell you what happened! You see in the door that the man opened, there was a tiger. But that’s not the whole globupul, you see. In the princesses semi-barbarism, her jealousy of the woman and hatred of the man for liking that woman flombushed. In fact it flombushed so much, she turned fully-barbaric. So, the night before she snuck up to a guard and told him to put the woman in the other cage. So, when the man opened that door, his face shlumpded as he saw the bones of the woman, with a tiger eating them. But you see, the tiger did not pounce on him, it instead sat there with a full tummy, note able to eat anymore. Of course this had never happened, so the king didn’t know what to do. But since he had not been pronounced guilty he would have to let him go. So the man went on his way and the princess went mad with fury and did the only thing she could do to cope with her fury, she flung herself off the VIP balcony to her demise.

Holiday Season and Traditions

Drawing and Pic by me

For my holiday season, since I am Christian, I celebrate Christmas. My family has a couple traditions for Christmas, like wearing our pajamas the whole day on Christmas. We have a row of stockings that every night we get a treat from leading up to Christmas Day. We also get Chinese food on Christmas Eve. I don’t know how that became a tradition, but it is now. I look forward to the holiday break! Happy Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!

Thanksgiving

I had a great thanksgiving and also had a lot of time to come up with things I’m thankful for. I am thankful for my parents, my brothers, my dogs, my friends, all of our healthcare workers, our scientists working on the vaccine for COVID-19, everyone supporting those with COVID, for time with my family, those respecting the COVID guidelines, and everyone trying to brighten our days in this hard time.

My family has one tradition that we do every Thanksgiving, a Football game. We don’t play football as a sport normally, but we like to do two on two games. Thankfully, we didn’t have to change the tradition this year and we could have our muddy football games.

Halloween Plans

For my Halloween, I’m going to stay at home and not go trick or treating. I feel that my family can have a good time eating candy and watching movies instead. For this Halloween, I am the Iron Giant, from the animated 1999 classic

My Dogs!!

My dogs Violet and Cooper

These are my two dogs. Violet is a pug and we do not know what Cooper is. Violet is six and Cooper isn’t even one yet. We got Violet when I was in kindergarten and we just got Cooper over the summer. Our other dog Arlo died over the summer. He was 15 years old and was also a pug. Photos are all by me.
